RC (Ready Capital Corporation) Posts a Distributable Loss as It Works Through Troubled Loans

Ready Capital reported a third-quarter distributable loss of $0.53 per common share on November 5. Losses on investments it sold accounted for much of that result, but even before those realized losses the company lost $0.21 per share on its distributable measure. That was an improvement from a $0.28 loss in June, though still well short of supporting the $0.01 quarterly common dividend.

Ready Capital earns money by originating and servicing loans, including financing for commercial properties and small businesses. When older commercial borrowers stop paying, the lender can lose interest income while it works to recover principal. Ready Capital is still resolving those loans, and common book value, the accounting value left for common shareholders, fell from $6.83 to $6.44 per share over the quarter.

The company retired $350 million of 4.50% notes in September and issued $225 million of 10% notes due in 2031. That gives the new debt a longer runway, but each dollar borrowed at the new rate costs more to carry. Management says the scheduled repayment of its November notes will clear the remaining 2026 corporate maturities, allowing it to focus on bringing distributable earnings and free cash flow back to break-even.

We see the progress on near-term maturities as useful, but the improvement before realized losses still leaves the common payout without current earnings support. The next meaningful sign would be a further narrowing of that underlying loss as Ready Capital works through its troubled loans.
