HRZN (Horizon Technology Finance Corporation) Earnings Edge Above the Regular Distribution

On November 5, Horizon Technology Finance reported third-quarter net investment income of $0.19 per share, up from $0.11 in the June quarter. That just cleared the $0.18 in regular distributions paid during the quarter. Horizon also declared three more regular monthly payments of $0.06 per share for January through March 2027. The announcement lists no special payments for those months.

Horizon lends to young companies in sectors including technology and life sciences, and its investment income depends on those borrowers paying interest and fees. The quarter’s $0.19 included the benefit of a $1 million management fee waiver tied to the Monroe Capital Corporation merger. On the reported share count, that saving was roughly 1.5 cents per share, enough to account for the slim margin over the regular distribution. The waiver runs through the June 2027 quarter.

Horizon funded $98.4 million of new loans during the quarter, giving it more assets that can earn interest. But stressed loans continued to weigh on net asset value, which ended September at $5.56 per share. And while the quarter’s income covered the regular payout, it fell short of the $0.27 paid once the three $0.03 specials are included. Horizon ended September with $0.24 per share of spillover income, or taxable income it had yet to distribute, down from $0.33 in June.

We see the move back above the regular payout as progress. The margin is thin enough that the stronger test will be whether performing loans generate enough income to sustain the $0.06 monthly payment after the fee waiver ends.
