GECC (Great Elm Capital Corp.) Earnings Fall Below Dividend as Asset Value Declines

Great Elm Capital Corp. reported on November 2, 2026 that third-quarter net investment income fell to $0.17 per share from $0.32 in the preceding quarter. It declared a fourth-quarter distribution of $0.25 per share, leaving the latest quarter’s investment income below that payment.

Net investment income measures investment revenue after expenses. The comparison needs some context: the preceding quarter benefited from a $2 million dividend on insurance-related preference shares and a waiver of incentive fees. Those fees resumed in the third quarter, so the earlier $0.32 was a stronger starting point than a repeatable earnings baseline.

Even with that explanation, the current shortfall matters. Net asset value, the value of assets after liabilities, fell to $7.40 per share from $7.95 on June 30. Investment losses included a $3.3 million reduction in the value of the company’s CLO Formation joint venture, which invests in vehicles that pool corporate loans. Management acknowledged pressure on that investment while describing its underlying credit portfolio as healthy.

Great Elm also reported progress in specialty finance and reduced some of its higher-cost debt. Those developments can help future income, but they have not yet restored earnings to the declared dividend level. The $0.25 fourth-quarter payment is scheduled for December 31, 2026, for shareholders of record December 15.

Our view is that dividend support has weakened. Removing an unusually helpful prior-quarter payment explains part of the decline, but it does not fill the current gap. A sustained recovery in net investment income, together with steadier asset values, would improve the case. Until then, the declared payment is running ahead of the latest quarter’s investment earnings.
