AOMR (Angel Oak Mortgage REIT, Inc.) Earnings Fall Short of Dividend as Book Value Declines

Angel Oak Mortgage REIT, Inc. reported on November 3, 2026 that third-quarter distributable earnings were $0.28 per diluted share, below the $0.32 common dividend it declared for November 30. The payment goes to shareholders of record November 23.

Distributable earnings are the company’s adjusted measure, which excludes unrealized portfolio gains and losses and certain other items. We prefer an adjusted measure for examining ongoing dividend support, while still looking at the economic effects those adjustments leave out. On that basis, the latest quarter’s earnings fell four cents short of the newly declared payment.

Asset values also weakened. The company reported economic book value of $11.45 per share, down 6.5% from the preceding quarter. Management attributed near-term valuation pressure and tighter potential returns on new investments to higher interest rates, while expressing confidence in the underlying credit performance of its mortgage portfolio. That confidence is management’s assessment, rather than evidence that the earnings gap has closed.

Angel Oak buys residential mortgages and other mortgage-related assets, earning the difference between investment income and financing and operating costs. It pools loans into securities to obtain longer-term financing. Following an October securitization, the company said its recourse debt-to-equity ratio declined to about 1.2 times from 2 times at September 30. Recourse debt can expose the company beyond the assets of an individual securitization, so reducing it is useful balance-sheet progress.

Our view is that the financing improvement helps, but dividend support remains short of where it needs to be. Stronger earnings per share and steadier economic book value would make the payment more convincing. The latest adjusted earnings alone do not fully support the declared dividend.
