Financial snapshot: 2026-06-30. Research reviewed 2026-09-24. The annual earnings comparison is from 2026-10-03. The business and balance-sheet figures below relate to the reporting period shown.
The income-producing business
Great Elm Capital's distribution capacity is driven by cash generation from its investment portfolio. Interest and fee income are the most direct recurring contributors, while credit losses, non-accrual investments, refinancing activity, borrowing costs, management expenses, and realized gains or losses can either strengthen or weaken the amount available for dividends. A BDC may also face distribution requirements associated with its tax structure, but those requirements do not by themselves establish that future dividends will be covered by recurring portfolio income.
This is the business behind the dividend. We care most about the recurring earnings left for shareholders after the costs of running and financing it.

The funding behind the assets
At 2026-06-30, Great Elm Capital Corp. reported $279.982 million of total assets and $169.564 million of total liabilities.
Liabilities represented 60.6% of reported assets. This broad balance-sheet measure includes more than borrowing and must not be read as a debt-to-equity ratio. Funding costs and asset losses can both reduce the earnings available to shareholders.

Do earnings cover the dividend?
Annual earnings of $1.09 per share compare with $1.00 in annual dividends. Coverage is 109.00%. Earnings cover the payment in this update. Keep watching whether that support holds up.
We like the earnings support here. A steady or growing cushion would make the income case more comfortable.
Fly High update 2026-10-03
Credit and portfolio-value risk
Great Elm Capital's investments are exposed to borrower stress, payment defaults, restructurings, and changes in estimated fair value. Credit deterioration can reduce income, produce realized losses, and limit cash available for dividends.
This exposure matters if it reduces the earnings left to pay the dividend. The next report will show whether that is happening.

Earnings variability
The disclosed quarterly earnings series has been uneven. A single quarter does not establish a durable run rate, and variable results make a narrow coverage margin more important to monitor.
This exposure matters if it reduces the earnings left to pay the dividend. The next report will show whether that is happening.

Lower income and weaker values in specific investments
For the first half of 2026, Great Elm received $5.1 million of distributions from its CLO joint venture versus $7.1 million a year earlier. The filing reports $3.8 million of unrealized depreciation in that joint venture, $2.2 million in Universal Fiber Systems and $1.5 million in Great Elm Specialty Finance. The performing debt portfolio also had a lower average coupon and principal balance than a year earlier.
Fly High assessment: These disclosed changes explain pressure on income from particular assets and a smaller lending base. Monitor recoveries and reinvestment returns, while keeping valuation changes distinct from cash distributions and realized investment proceeds.

Coverage improved, with limited cash on hand
At June 30, 2026, Great Elm held $1.669 million of cash and equivalents and $3.966 million of short-term investments. Asset coverage improved to 166.4% from 158.1% at year-end, above the 150% minimum, and the issuer reported compliance with its note covenants. The $166.4 million of contractual debt principal had no scheduled maturity within one year.
Fly High assessment: Improved coverage and the absence of near-term principal maturities help, but the small cash balance and remaining coverage margin deserve monitoring. Portfolio sales and revolving borrowing can provide liquidity but cannot substitute for recurring income.

NAV losses partly offset by realized gains
NAV per share declined from $8.07 at December 31, 2025 to $7.95 at June 30, 2026. The first-half highlights show $0.68 of net investment income, $0.40 of realized gains, $0.67 of unrealized losses, $0.55 of distributions and $0.02 of share-buyback accretion.
Fly High assessment: Net investment income exceeded distributions, but investment valuation losses still reduced capital per share after realized gains and repurchases. Watch whether the underlying assets can rebuild value and sustain income without repeated asset sales.
