TSLX (Sixth Street Specialty Lending, Inc.) Earnings Edge Above Dividend Payments

Sixth Street Specialty Lending reported on November 3, 2026 that third-quarter adjusted net investment income reached $0.44 per share, edging up from $0.43 in the previous quarter. That leaves a modest cushion over its $0.42 quarterly base dividend, while a newly declared $0.01 supplemental payment brings the two announced payments to $0.43.
We see a business holding its ground, although the margin for disappointment is thin. Net investment income is what remains from lending and investment income after expenses, and the company’s adjusted measure helps us judge ongoing earning power. The $0.44 result improved slightly from June but remained below the $0.53 earned a year earlier.
Sixth Street lends mainly to middle-market businesses. Much of that lending carries floating interest rates, so lower reference rates can reduce interest collected from borrowers. Third-quarter investment income fell to $99.0 million from $109.4 million a year earlier, with the company identifying lower reference rates as the main reason. Cheaper borrowing helped offset that pressure: its average interest rate on outstanding debt declined to 5.7% from 6.3%.
There were also encouraging signs in the loan portfolio. Investments no longer accruing interest, meaning the company has stopped recognizing their contractual interest as income, declined to 1.1% of portfolio fair value from 1.3% in June. Still, asset value per share slipped to $16.19 from $16.24, and the company cited credit-related declines in a small number of investments among the factors behind that movement.
New investment funding rose to about $247 million from $137 million in the preceding quarter. That can help replenish income, but the benefit depends on the returns those investments earn after financing costs and any future credit losses. More lending alone does not establish stronger earnings per share.
The $0.42 base dividend is payable on December 31, 2026 to shareholders of record on December 15. The $0.01 supplemental dividend is payable on December 21 to shareholders of record on November 30. These are separate declarations, and the latest quarterly earnings comparison is not a forward dividend guarantee.
Our view is cautiously constructive: the slight earnings improvement and lower troubled-loan share support the current payment, but a one-cent cushion over the two announced dividends gives little room for weaker lending income. Sustained adjusted earnings above those payments, alongside stable credit quality, would make the case more convincing.
