RWAY (Runway Growth Finance Corp.) Earnings Top the Dividend as Loan Repayments Mount

On November 5, Runway Growth Finance reported third-quarter net investment income of $0.38 per share and announced a $0.33 fourth-quarter dividend. That gives the payout a five-cent cushion against the latest quarter’s income, but Runway has also seen a substantial amount of loan principal come back. How it puts that money to work matters for future earnings.
Runway lends to growth-stage companies and earns interest and fees on those loans. Four borrowers repaid $130.7 million in principal during the September quarter, while Runway funded $8.5 million of investments. It reported another $55 million of debt prepayments between October 1 and November 5. Repayments free up cash, but once a loan is paid off, its interest stops. Runway has to find suitable new loans or reduce expenses to offset that lost income.
There was progress on funding costs. On November 3, Runway redeemed about $33 million of 9% notes that had been due in January 2027. That removed a near-term maturity and its interest expense. Separately, Runway issued about $46 million of 7.75% notes in October that mature in 2031, so the overall effect on borrowing costs depends on how much debt it carries as well as the rates it pays.
We think the latest earnings give the $0.33 payout some room. With repayments running well ahead of new funding, the next test is whether Runway can sustain that margin as interest from the repaid loans drops out and the new debt costs flow through.
