FDUS (Fidus Investment Corporation) Raises Supplemental Dividend as Adjusted Earnings Rise
View the FDUS Dividend Stock Profile
On November 5, Fidus Investment reported third-quarter adjusted net investment income of $0.54 per share and announced fourth-quarter dividends totaling the same amount. The $0.43 base dividend stays in place, while the supplemental payment rises to $0.11 from the $0.07 paid in September.
Fidus provides debt and equity financing to smaller U.S. businesses, and loan interest does much of the work for the dividend. Adjusted net investment income, which excludes the accrual for the capital gains incentive fee, rose from $0.50 per share a year earlier. Fidus attributed the increase in total interest income mainly to a larger average loan book, even though the average rate it earned on those investments was lower.
The latest quarter’s adjusted income was $0.11 above the base payment, enough to match the newly declared supplemental dividend as well. Fidus also estimated $0.95 per share in spillover income at September 30, or taxable income it had yet to distribute. That gives the board flexibility, while the level of future supplemental payments will still depend on what the portfolio earns and what the board declares.
We think the larger loan book is giving the base dividend useful breathing room. The combined payout uses that entire margin at September’s earnings rate, so steady interest income matters more for sustaining the larger supplement than it does for supporting the base payment.
