MFA (MFA Financial, Inc.) Credit Losses Leave Earnings Below Dividend

MFA Financial reported on November 4, 2026 that third-quarter distributable earnings were $0.26 per share, below its $0.36 quarterly dividend. Credit losses remain a drag on the income available to support the payment, even as loan delinquencies improve.

The mortgage investor also reported $0.44 per share of distributable earnings before realized credit losses. That figure helps explain the underlying income potential, but those losses are real costs to shareholders. We would judge the dividend against the $0.26 remaining after them.

MFA earns income from residential loans and mortgage-backed securities, with borrowing costs and borrower losses affecting what remains. Its proportion of residential loans at least 60 days delinquent fell to 6.7% from 7.0% in June. Economic book value, its adjusted measure of shareholder capital per share, ended September at $11.44.

Management says higher available investment yields offer opportunities to rebuild earning power. Our view is that the improving loan-payment picture is welcome, but the dividend still needs stronger support from earnings after credit losses. Better prospective returns become convincing when they produce more income shareholders can actually keep.
