MFA (MFA Financial, Inc.) Names Bryan Wulfsohn as Next Chief Executive

MFA Financial announced on October 8, 2026 that President and Chief Investment Officer Bryan Wulfsohn will become chief executive on July 1, 2027. Current chief executive Craig Knutson plans to retire on June 30, 2027 and remain a director, subject to shareholder reelection.

Wulfsohn has worked at MFA for 16 years and already oversees the selection and funding of its investments. He will join the board on January 1, 2027. Andrew Kail, previously head of residential lending at Starwood Capital Group, will become MFA’s chief investment officer on the same date.

We welcome the advance notice and an orderly handover to someone who knows the portfolio. Mortgage lending depends on decisions about which loans to own, how to finance them and how to handle borrowers who struggle to pay. Those decisions eventually affect the income left for shareholders after financing and operating costs.

The appointment itself does not change dividend support. MFA has announced a leadership plan, with no new earnings forecast or dividend decision in this release. Experience is useful, but the evidence we care about is the income the business produces per share.

As the transition approaches, we will watch for changes in lending priorities and financing, followed by their effect on earnings. Continuity is reassuring when it helps preserve earning power; it is not proof of better results on its own.
