CIM (Chimera Investment Corporation) Earnings Fall Below the Common Dividend

Chimera Investment Corporation reported on November 5, 2026 that third-quarter earnings available for distribution fell to $0.38 per adjusted diluted common share from $0.46 in the second quarter. The latest figure fell seven cents short of the $0.45 third-quarter common dividend.

Book value, the value left for common shareholders after liabilities and preferred equity, fell to $14.82 per share. Management pointed to swings in interest rates and wider mortgage spreads, meaning investors demanded more yield to hold mortgage assets. That puts pressure on the value of existing holdings. Chimera also completed its first $291 million securitization backed by loans from its HomeXpress business after quarter-end. Bundling those loans into securities gives Chimera another way to finance its mortgage lending.

We see the new funding channel as progress, but the move from a one-cent earnings cushion in June to a seven-cent shortfall in September makes the common dividend less comfortably supported. The next report needs to show whether Chimera can earn more from its mortgage assets and new lending after funding costs.
