NMFC (New Mountain Finance Corporation) Earnings Narrowly Cover Dividend as Asset Value Falls

New Mountain Finance Corporation reported on November 2, 2026 that third-quarter adjusted net investment income was $0.26 per share, just above its $0.25 dividend. It also declared a $0.25 fourth-quarter distribution, payable December 31 to shareholders of record December 17.
The payment has current earnings support, although the cushion is thin. Adjusted net investment income, the income left after expenses with specified nonrecurring costs removed, fell from $0.32 per share a year earlier. This quarter’s adjustment excluded accelerated financing costs and a related fee adjustment. We prefer the adjusted measure for judging ongoing earning power, while recognizing that financing costs still affect shareholders.
Net asset value, the value of investments and other assets after liabilities, declined to $10.67 per share from $10.89 on June 30. Management wants to sell equity and investments that pay interest through additional debt rather than cash, then reinvest in first-lien, cash-paying loans. Those loans have priority claims on borrowers’ collateral, but that priority does not eliminate credit risk.
Our view is that the dividend is supported by the latest quarter’s adjusted earnings, with little room for disappointment. Turning more of the portfolio into dependable cash income would strengthen that position. Until those reinvestments lift earnings per share and the slide in asset value steadies, the small earnings cushion deserves more attention than the headline yield.
