FBRT (Franklin BSP Realty Trust, Inc.) Reappoints Richard Byrne as Chief Executive

Franklin BSP Realty Trust announced on September 17, 2026, that chairman Richard Byrne had returned as chief executive officer, effective September 16.

Byrne succeeds Michael Comparato, who resigned on September 15. The company said Comparato stepped back from daily executive responsibilities to spend more time with his family and will serve as a senior adviser to external manager Benefit Street Partners through 2027.

Byrne previously led FBRT from 2016 through February 2026 and remains chairman. Chief financial officer and chief operating officer Jerry Baglien also became co-president alongside Brian Buffone. Baglien will lead BSP’s commercial real estate debt platform.

Why it matters

A CEO change affects responsibility for lending decisions, troubled-loan resolutions and capital allocation. Returning to a former CEO may support continuity, although that is an inference rather than evidence of improved performance.

The announcement does not change the dividend or provide new earnings guidance. Management continuity is supporting evidence; the key financial test remains whether the company’s dividend-source earnings support its distributions.

Shareholders should watch the next earnings report for loan recoveries, credit costs and any change in strategy under the returning CEO.
