PMT (PennyMac Mortgage Investment Trust) Signals Dividend Reduction Despite Better Adjusted Earnings
View the PMT Dividend Stock Profile
PennyMac Mortgage Investment Trust reported improved adjusted earnings on October 29, 2026, but management said on its earnings call that it expects to reduce the fourth-quarter common dividend. That distinction matters: better earnings have not removed the pressure on the payment.
Adjusted earnings rose to $0.35 per share from $0.25 in the previous quarter, against a $0.40 quarterly dividend. This company measure excludes market-driven value changes. Book value per share nevertheless fell from $14.83 to $14.03, showing that the assets backing future income also felt the quarter’s strain.
PMT invests in mortgages, mortgage securities and the rights to collect fees for servicing loans. It is selling some servicing rights and moving capital toward mortgage credit investments, while expanding its capacity to repurchase shares.
Management expects a smaller dividend to leave more capital for that strategy. The amount remains a board decision, so an expected reduction should not be presented as a newly declared payment.
We welcome the improvement in adjusted earnings, but a repurchase program cannot replace the cash income shareholders receive. Our view is that the capital shift needs to deliver stronger earnings per share after financing costs before the dividend story becomes more reassuring. The next declaration will establish the payment; subsequent results will show whether the strategy is earning it.
