Nonrecurring Item

A nonrecurring item is a gain, charge or event that is not expected to repeat as part of ordinary operations. The label requires judgment and does not become valid merely because management uses it.

Why this matters to income investors

Removing genuinely unusual items can clarify underlying earnings, but excluding normal or repeatedly occurring costs can make dividend support look stronger than it is.

How to use nonrecurring item in your research

Examine the nature, cash effect and history of the item, compare treatment across periods and review the company’s reconciliation with GAAP results.
