Company overview
Understand the business
The company invests capital in loans and other credit instruments issued by middle-market businesses. It earns interest income, including income from floating-rate loans where applicable, along with certain fee income. After paying borrowing costs, management expenses, and other operating costs, the remaining net investment income supports shareholder distributions, subject to portfolio credit performance, financing conditions, and the company’s distribution policy.
Primary earnings measures
Net investment income per share is the key recurring earnings measure for MidCap Financial. It captures the investment income produced by the lending portfolio less financing and operating expenses, and it is the appropriate starting point for assessing whether recurring earnings support distributions. Reported quarterly net investment income per share was ﹩0.39 in the second quarter of 2025, ﹩0.38 in the third quarter of 2025, ﹩0.39 in the fourth quarter of 2025, ﹩0.38 in the first quarter of 2026, and ﹩0.40 in the second quarter of 2026.
How the company supports its distribution
The distribution engine begins with the yield earned on the investment portfolio. Net investment income can benefit when portfolio yields rise, loan balances expand, funding costs remain controlled, and borrowers continue to pay as agreed. It can weaken when loans are placed on non-accrual status, credit losses occur, portfolio repayments reduce income-producing assets, borrowing costs rise faster than asset yields, or operating expenses increase.
