Blue Owl Capital Corporation lends to businesses and earns interest, while loan-related fees and dividends from equity investments add to its income. Its loan portfolio is mainly floating-rate, so lending income responds to benchmark rates, but repayments and the terms on new loans also influence what it earns. That makes the timing and quality of its lending important alongside the headline portfolio yield.

How the business works
OBDC's dividend has support, but the cushion is thin: the current Fly High annual earnings figure only modestly exceeds the annual payment. Recorded retained earnings add a separate, finite buffer, not recurring income or proof of available cash. Annual earnings and the payment are unchanged from the preceding update, so the higher displayed yields reflect a lower share price rather than improved earning power.
The first-half filing shows why capital still deserves attention. Investment values fell and distributions exceeded reported net investment income, while repurchases only partly offset the NAV decline. Stronger earnings per share alongside a steadier NAV would make the dividend more convincing; further investment losses would make the narrow cushion less reassuring.

OBDC's portfolio is mainly private-company debt and equity rather than investments with readily quoted market prices. Its adviser estimates fair values with independent valuation input, which makes the quality of those estimates important when reading the capital figures.

Annual earnings of $1.29 per share compare with $1.24 in annual dividends. Coverage is 104.03%. Earnings cover the payment in this update. Keep watching whether that support holds up.
OBDC's loan income includes more than the interest borrowers pay. Origination fees and loan discounts are recognized over time within interest income, while early repayments can generate prepayment premiums. Equity holdings can also contribute dividends.
A repayment can bring a premium but also remove a loan that was producing interest. That makes replacement lending important: a stronger quarter for fees would not, by itself, establish a more dependable stream of income for the dividend.
OBDC's second-quarter interest bill fell from a year earlier because average borrowing and the average rate paid were both lower. Management fees also declined as investment sales and repayments reduced the asset base.
Lower borrowing costs help protect the income left for shareholders, but they do not establish that earnings per share are improving. Sales and repayments can reduce expenses while also leaving fewer investments to generate income, so the benefit needs to be judged alongside the portfolio's earning power.

We like the earnings support here. A steady or growing cushion would make the income case more comfortable.
OBDC generally stops accruing interest when full collection of a loan's principal or interest becomes doubtful, and previously booked interest is normally reversed. Later cash receipts may count as income or reduce the outstanding principal, depending on the prospect of recovery.
The useful recovery for dividend income is a borrower resuming dependable payments, not merely a change in the loan's valuation. Collections and final recoveries help show whether a troubled investment is restoring income or simply returning some of the capital at risk.
At June 30, 2026, floating-rate loans represented 96.0% of OBDC's debt investments by fair value. Its credit facilities also carry variable rates, while its unsecured borrowing includes fixed-rate notes and notes affected by interest-rate swaps.
Lower rates can reduce loan income even as they ease some borrowing costs, so the net effect matters more than either side alone. Loan-rate floors provide some protection, but they do not remove the risk that the margin between lending income and financing costs narrows.
Between December 31, 2025 and June 30, 2026, the cost of loans no longer accruing interest increased while their fair value fell. Their share of portfolio cost also rose, even as their share of fair value declined.
The smaller fair-value share is not a convincing recovery signal when the cost of troubled loans has risen and their marked value has fallen. Better collections and capital recoveries would improve the picture more than a smaller marked percentage alone.
Available facilities and improving coverage headroom
At June 30, 2026, OBDC reported $4.14 billion available under credit facilities after borrowing-base limitations and $238.0 million of cash and restricted cash combined. Asset coverage increased to 187% from 178% at year-end, compared with a 150% minimum. The weighted average cost of debt was 5.8%.
Fly High assessment: The disclosed facility availability and improved asset coverage do not indicate an immediate funding gap. Restricted cash is not freely available, and unused facilities still depend on their contractual and regulatory conditions.
NAV finished June 30, 2026 at $14.26 per share after a $0.55 first-half decline. Investment losses of $0.59 per share outweighed the $0.05 repurchase benefit, while distributions were slightly higher than reported net investment income.
Investment losses did more damage to capital than the small earnings shortfall, and repurchases did not reverse that erosion. Stronger investment performance and a steadier NAV would offer more convincing support for future income than further buyback accretion alone.
Look for troubled borrowers to resume payments and for recoveries to limit final losses. Those would be more useful signs of improvement than a fall in the fair-value share of non-accrual investments alone, because they address the income and capital behind OBDC's dividend.
