Hiring Rebounds as Rate Pressure Builds
U.S. payrolls increased 162,000 in August, well above forecasts, while unemployment held at 4.1%. June and July were revised up by a combined 55,000. Average hourly earnings rose 0.3% for the month and 3.1% from a year earlier.
For the Fly High universe, firmer hiring supports borrower revenues, property cash flow, and earnings, the primary signal for dividend support. The tradeoff is renewed rate pressure: resilient demand can keep policy restrictive, raising refinancing and funding costs. BDC floating-rate income may benefit, but borrowers also carry more interest expense; mortgage REIT book values and funding remain sensitive to yield moves.
With Brent still above $95 after renewed Gulf hostilities, Friday’s jobs strength does not remove the inflation risk. Watch next week’s CPI and whether Treasury yields rise enough to tighten credit.
